SNS

The breakdown that assigns every system and component on a product a number, forming the subject portion of every data module code.

Definition

What SNS Means

SNS stands for

Standard Numbering System

The SNS is how a product is divided up for documentation purposes, and it becomes part of the address of every module written against it. S1000D publishes example systems for various product types, and civil aviation programs often build on the same chapter logic as the ATA chapters.

Choosing an SNS is one of the earliest and least reversible decisions on a program. Change it later and every data module code changes with it, along with every cross-reference, which is why it is a business rules decision made deliberately rather than a default accepted quietly.

Also written: standard numbering system
