What S1000D Means
S1000D stands for
International specification for technical publications using a common source database
S1000D is not a file format and not a piece of software. It is a specification describing how technical information is broken into discrete, reusable data modules, how each one is identified and addressed, and how they are stored and assembled from a common source database.
Two things make it different from a general documentation standard. It is normally arrived at by contract rather than chosen, so the issue you work to is set by an acquisition authority. And it deliberately leaves a great deal open, which the program closes through its business rules layer. Two conformant S1000D programs can look almost nothing alike, and that is by design rather than by failure.
