ATA Chapter

The numbering scheme that divides an aircraft into standard systems, so the same subject sits at the same number across manufacturers.

Definition

What ATA Chapter Means

ATA chapters give the industry a shared address space: chapter 32 is landing gear whoever built the aircraft. That consistency is why a technician moving between types can still find things.

The scheme predates the digital specifications built on it and survives inside them, including as the basis for standard numbering in civil S1000D programs.
