Who ATA iSpec 2200 Applies To
ATA iSpec 2200 is the established information standard for commercial aircraft maintenance documentation, maintained through the airline industry's own standards body. It is what most operators' legacy libraries are built on, and its chapter numbering is embedded far beyond documentation — in maintenance planning, parts catalogs, defect reporting and training. That reach is why it persists on fleets long after newer specifications arrive.
Where ATA iSpec 2200 Programs Go Wrong
- Underestimating how far chapter numbering reaches. Changing documentation standards does not change the numbering your maintenance and planning systems key off, and treating them as one migration conflates two projects.
- Migrating the library before agreeing what the target looks like. Conversion is cheap to start and expensive to redo.
- Assuming supplier content arrives compliant. OEM data comes in mixed formats and levels of conformance, and the ingestion path is where a centralised library succeeds or fails.
- Losing the relationship between revisions. If superseded content is deleted rather than retained and marked, you cannot establish what a maintainer was working from on a given date.

- The newer international specification many operators are moving toward. Migration is usually gradual and the two coexist for years.

What is ATA iSpec 2200?

It defines both the content structure and how that content is exchanged between manufacturers, suppliers and operators.
What is the ATA chapter numbering system?
A shared numbering scheme that assigns every aircraft system a chapter number, so that the same system is found in the same place regardless of aircraft type or manufacturer. Air conditioning is chapter 21 on any aircraft; landing gear is chapter 32. The full list is on this page. Its value is precisely that it is universal, which is also why it outlives the documentation standards built on top of it.
Should we move from iSpec 2200 to S1000D?
It depends on what is forcing the question. If new aircraft arrive with S1000D data you will be running both regardless, and the decision is about how long. If the driver is a wish to modernize, the honest assessment is that the migration cost is real and the benefit depends on whether you need the applicability and lifecycle machinery S1000D provides. We are happy to say when the answer is not yet.

Is ATA iSpec 2200 required by law?
No. It is an industry standard maintained through Airlines for America, not a regulation — no aviation authority mandates it. It becomes binding the way most documentation standards do: through contracts and data exchange agreements between manufacturers, suppliers, and operators. In practice that makes it nearly unavoidable in commercial aviation, but the obligation is commercial, not legal.

iSpec 2200 is licensed, not free — searches for a free PDF end at unauthorized or superseded copies. The specification is sold by Airlines for America through its publications store, which is the only source that guarantees the current revision.
