What MEL Means
MEL stands for
Minimum Equipment List
The manufacturer publishes a master minimum equipment list. Each operator derives its own MEL from it, as restrictive or more, adapted to its routes, fleet and procedures, and gets that approved for its operation.
Crews dispatch against the operator's MEL, so the version in front of them has to be the approved current one. It is a document whose correctness is checked at the moment of use, every time.
