Why S1000D Is Hard to Learn
It tells you what is allowed, not what to choose
S1000D is written to serve very different programs (air, land, and sea), so it leaves a long list of decisions to each project as business rules. The specification even ships a Business Rules Project Decision Point Index to enumerate them. Teams learning alone tend to discover those decisions late, after content has been authored against defaults nobody chose.
The concepts only make sense together
The data module code is built on the SNS, applicability depends on how the product is configured, the BREX enforces the business rules, and common information repositories hold what many modules share. Learn any one of them in isolation and it looks arbitrary; the model only clicks as a whole.
The issue matters
Programs run on different issues (4.1, 4.2, 5.0, 6, and now Issue 7), and service business rules are tied to specific ones: MIL-STD-3031 aligns with Issue 4.2 and MIL-STD-3048 with Issue 4.1. Material written for one issue can quietly mislead on another.
Fluency comes from your own content
A course gives a team the shared model. Working fluency arrives when they apply it to their own product, business rules, and toolchain, which is the stretch where most programs stall, and the reason we coach as well as teach.

S1000D Training Questions
How long does it take to learn S1000D?
Our foundation module takes one to two days and gives the whole team a shared model; the technical module adds three to four days in the XML for the people who will author it. That is enough to start working, not to be fluent. Fluency comes from applying it to your own program, which is why we offer coaching alongside the course.
Can we learn S1000D from the specification alone?
Some teams do, slowly. The specification is a reference: it defines what is valid across every kind of program, and it was not written to tell a team what to learn first or which of its options to choose. Teams learning from it alone tend to spend their early months on concepts a course covers in days, and to make business rules decisions by default rather than by design.
What is S1000D coaching?
An experienced practitioner working alongside your team after the course, on your own program: helping settle business rules decisions, reviewing the first data modules and the BREX that checks them, and answering the questions a real product raises that no course anticipates. The aim is the same as the training: a team that no longer needs us.
Which issue of S1000D do you teach?
