Definition

What MIL-STD-38784 Means

38784 does not define a manual's technical content; the detail specification cited for each manual type does that. It defines the presentation layer those manuals share: style, format, the handling of changes, and the conventions readers rely on across documents.

Its warning, caution and note conventions are worth knowing precisely, because they differ from the ANSI Z535.6 conventions that govern commercial product manuals. A team writing for both markets is running two rule sets that share a vocabulary.
