What SGML Means
SGML stands for
Standard Generalized Markup Language
SGML was a framework for defining markup languages rather than a language itself, and defense and aerospace produced decades of technical manuals under standards built on it.
Those libraries still exist and still have to be read, revised and eventually converted. They are also the best-behaved legacy content there is, because they were validated against a grammar when they were written.
